First Presbyterian Church, Flint MI 1973 - 1974
I started the conversion from piano to classical organ in 1973 under the guidance of William T. Renneckar at First Presbyterian, Flint MI. My exposure to Bill’s professionalism as an organist/choirmaster greatly influenced my decision to enter college in the field of church music. While studying with Bill, I also rang in the handbell choir, sang in the youth choir, and occasionally played a postlude as guest organist. The large Schantz pipe organ at First Presbyterian was the very first pipe organ I had ever played as a young man.
Pleasantville United Church of Christ, Chalfont, PA 1975 - 1976
This was my first paid church job during my Sophomore year at Westminster Choir College. The church was located in rural Bucks county PA, home to many Mennonite settlements. I was hired as organist and worked with a choir director who was a graduate student at Westminster. We performed many works including the Daniel Pinkham “Cantata,” and Buryl Red’s “It’s Cool In The Furnace.”
First Presbyterian Church, Ramsey, NJ 1977 - 1978
After taking off a year to devote more time to organ studies at Westminster, I returned to church music as organist at the First Presbyterian Church, Ramsey, NJ. My choir director was a fellow student at Westminster. While at First Presbyterian Ramsey, I presided over the organ replacement committee. The summer following graduation from Westminster, I lived for a short time in Mahwah, NJ, on the Joyce Kilmer (of the poem “trees” fame) estate property.
Farnumwood Presbyterian Church, Burton, MI 1978 - 1988
I began working at Farnumwood the winter after I graduated from College. I was hired as organist/choirmaster. During my 10 year tenure at Farnumwood I was fortunate to accomplish some personal goals, most notably securing a new organ, establishing a handbell choir, and inaugurating a annual music concert tradition called Music Sunday. While at Farnumwood, I served on several occasions as commencement organist for Kettering University (then called GMI) and for the Hurley School of Nursing (now defunct). I also coordinated and directed the musical portions of the “Presbyterian Celebration” service held at Flint’s Whiting auditorium.
Grand Blanc United Methodist Church, Grand Blanc, MI 1988 - 1989
I was hired at Grand Blanc to fill in for the regular organist who was on sabbatical for a year completing a college degree. While at Grand Blanc, I participated with three others in a “Performance Majors” concert. I also rang in the church’s 4 octave handbell choir.
Bethany United Methodist Church, Clio, MI 1989 - 2009
Originally hired as Organist /Accompanist, I developed a "graded" music program with opportunities for all ages establishing a handbell choir, a children and youth choir, and a church orchestra. In the fall of 1999 the choir director retired from her position allowing me the opportunity to lead a combined position. After the acquisition of a Yamaha Clavinova, I learned midi orchestration and ultimately arranged dozens of anthems and cantata accompaniments. I also oversaw the building of a new a choir suite which provided a dedicated space for rehearsals and instruments. In 2008 I inaugurated a concert music series.
Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, Grand Blanc, MI 2009 – 2011
I worked at HSL in a combined position as Organist, Director of Music and Director of Worship. I directed the Adult Choir and supervised volunteer staff who worked with the SonBurst, Children's, and Youth choirs.
I also established a web based resource for song leaders and the choir which provided the ability for them to go to the church's website and find rehearsal recordings of all service music and anthems.
